British people are increasingly turning to takeaways as they avoid eating out during the credit crunch.
Just-Eat Group, which coordinates local restaurant orders, said orders had increased by 250 per cent last year and then achieved a record £100,000 worth on New Year's Day 2009.
British people ate £7.5 million worth of takeaways last year, including Chinese, Indian, Japanese and Thai.
David Buttress, chief executive of Just-Eat.co.uk, said: "We are expecting this growth to continue in 2009
as Britons continue to enjoy stay-at-home meals."
However, this could be putting pressure on the nation's waistlines - a survey carried out by Which? last year found that an Indian takeaway could contain 23.2 grams of saturated fat, more than a person should eat in an entire day.
Chinese takeaways contained an average of 19 teaspoons of sugar.
