Too much fatty food in the home 'may cause obesity'

Simply having large quantities of fatty and unhealthy food in the home could encourage people to eat more, potentially leading to obesity.

This is the opinion of David Dzewaltowski, a professor at Kansas State University, who said that because fruit and vegetables are mostly more expensive than chocolate and other less healthy foods, they may be less readily available in the home.

Not only this, but having large plates, bowls and serving utensils could also encourage people to eat more because they are unaware of the portion sizes they are consuming.

The professor advised anyone who feels they may be eating too much fatty food to "make healthy options easily accessible, like having vegetables readily prepared for snacking and a fruit bowl".

Those looking for healthy snack foods to provide for guests this Christmas could consider peanuts - the American Peanut Council recently said the nut is set to make a comeback as people seek cheap, healthy alternatives to processed snacks.
