Washing the car could be more effective in terms of a workout than a session at the gym, it has been claimed.
Research carried out by MORE TH>N found that washing an average sized saloon car could burn up to 500 calories in 90 minutes, compared to an hour's cycling, which burns 270 calories.
This could also make cleaning the car more effective than a 40-minute run or 45 minutes' worth of circuit training.
Graeme Marsh, an independent fitness expert, said: "A lot of people might not think it but the carwash offers the type of all-round body workout difficult to recreate using gym equipment."
However, it was also found that 54 per cent of women have never washed their own cars, relying instead on their partners or a mechanical carwash to do so.
Earlier this month, researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand suggested that relaxing could be a good way of losing weight, since it reduces cravings for fatty foods.
