Watching more TV 'could lead to unhealthy eating'

A team of researchers in the US claim they have discovered a link between watching TV for long periods and developing unhealthy eating patterns later in life.

Scientists at the University of Minnesota, led by Dr Daheia Barr-Anderson, found that high school students who watched more than five hours of television per day ate less fruit and vegetables and more fast foods containing trans-fats five years later.

Dr Barr-Anderson put this down to the frequency and type of advertising displayed between progammes, which has more of an effect on younger people.

"These less than healthy foodstuffs are commonly advertised on television while healthy foods rarely receive the same publicity," she pointed out.

Earlier this month, a study from Newcastle University found that more than a quarter of the adverts featured in women's magazines were for foods high in salt and sugar, while only 1.8 per cent were for fruit and vegetables.
