A surprising number of children in the UK are unaware of the serious impact that junk food can have upon their health, it has been found.
Research carried out by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) discovered that 73 per cent of people aged between eight and 15 did not know that a lifetime of burgers and cake could significantly reduce their life expectancy.
Meanwhile, 45 per cent were more worried about the effects fat-laden foods could have on their appearance, with most concerns arising about getting spots, becoming unpopular or developing dental problems.
Mike Knapton, BHF director of prevention and care, said: "Today's junk food generation can't see beyond the burger box. They are missing the fact that eating unhealthily can have dire consequences on their long-term health."
The charity said it is worried that today's children could be the first generation in recent times who die before their parents.
A government warning recently said that as much as 90 per cent of the UK population could be obese by 2050 if nothing is done to fight against it.
