1 in 3 people 'could have caught obesity'
As many as one in three overweight people could have caught their obesity in the same manner as they could catch the flu, it has been claimed.
Scientists who will appear on the BBC2 programme Horizon tonight (January 26th) will state that the AD-36 virus is spread by dirty hands and that it attacks tissue and causes fat cells to multiply, leading to obesity.
Professor Nikhil Dhurandhar, who led the research, said: "This may explain why the fat tissue expands and why people get fat when they are infected with this virus."
It is hoped that learning more about the adenovirus’s role could lead to a vaccine or drugs to tackle this kind of obesity.
