2,000 Britons 'too fat to work'

New data has shown that more than 2,000 people from the UK are on incapacity benefits because they are too obese to work.

The figures, obtained by the Conservatives for a parliamentary debate, show that 2,130 people were receiving such payouts as of last August, with one in 1,200 receiving the maximum £84.50 a week.

This could be costing the taxpayer as much as £9.4 million every year.

James Clappison, shadow work and pensions minister, said that the UK is facing "a ticking obesity timebomb".

A spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions said the organisation is determined to get anyone who is able to work back into the labour market.

The Mirror recently reported that the number of obesity-related diseases which affect people's ability to work will more than double by 2050, according to health minister Dawn Primarolo.

"[Obesity] increases health risks and certainly has the potential to shorten lives. On top of that it affects quality of life, ability to work," she remarked.
