Scientists in America have discovered a possible link between the levels of bacteria in the gut and obesity.
According to research carried out by Dr John DiBaise - a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona - and his colleagues from the University of Arizona, some people’s digestive systems process too much energy because they have more bacteria and therefore store too much fat.
Individuals of normal weight or those who had undergone gastric bypass surgery were found to have lower levels of digestive bacteria in their gut.
Dr DiBaise likened the increased bacterial activity to "cars flooding a motorway" and said more research should be done on the subject as it could highlight new ways to fight obesity.
