Being seriously overweight has the same detrimental effects on the body as smoking ten cigarettes a day, new research has found.
Scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden have published a study in the British Medical Journal which shows that people who are obese are twice as likely to die early than their thinner counterparts.
However, the research - which looked at 46,000 people from the age of 18 to the age of 56 - also found that being obese and smoking upped this risk five-fold.
Obese teenagers who did not smoke were still as likely to die early as heavy smokers.
"We found that overweight and obesity in late adolescence is associated with premature death, regardless of smoking status," the team led by Dr Martin Neovius said.
In November, health secretary Alan Johnson said that 9,000 people now die of obesity-related conditions including diabetes and heart disease every year.
