British man 'too fat to adopt'
A British couple have been refused the right to adopt because the man is obese.
Damien and Charlotte Hall sought to adopt a child because they have been unable to conceive naturally.
However, Mr Hall was sent a letter which said he is an unsuitable candidate because his body mass index (BMI) is too high - it is 42, while the recommended level has to be 40.
In an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live’s Victoria Derbyshire programme, he denied that he is a couch potato who eats takeaways every night and said he has often tried to lose weight.
"It’s hard to lose weight under pressure. I just feel as though we were only judged on my weight and not all the other good things about us," Mr Hall remarked.
A spokesperson for Leeds council defended its decision, saying that it has a responsibility to place children with people who can provide the best lifelong care.
