Supermarkets that are promoting unhealthy food because it is cheaper are causing an epidemic of obesity, it has been claimed.
Dr Tim Lobstein from the International Association for the Study of Obesity, said that as people try to cut their spending on food during the credit crunch, they are buying cheaper items such as frozen pizza and processed meals instead of spending extra on organic fruit.
"Reduced spending on food would usually mean going for the cheaper food lines and these are generally more sugary and fatty," he commented to the Financial Times.
Dr Lobstein added that this is likely to lead to increased incidences of diabetes and heart disease.
Earlier this month, the government warned that as much as 90 per cent of the UK population could be obese by 2050 if nothing is done to fight against it.
