Cooped up children 'at risk of obesity'

Parental fears about letting children play outside could be contributing to the obesity problem, according to a new study.

In a survey of more than 2,000 adults, parents claimed that their children may be gaining weight because they are spending more time indoors.

According to Dr Richard Woolfson, a child psychologist, parental fears about childhood safety mean there are fewer opportunities for young people to play outdoors.

"This reduction in physical movement during play almost certainly contributes to the increase in childhood obesity," he said.

However, he explained that there are many ways mums and dads can replace this time with different, safer activities including walking to school, participating in swimming classes or cycling in a safe place.

Research carried out by University College London has predicted that some 13 million adults in the UK will be classed as obese by 2012.

This figure is based on rising obesity levels recorded between 1993 and 2004 as part of the Health Survey for England.
