A council is to bring in a charge for burying larger people in its cemeteries, it has emerged.
According to the Mirror, Houghton Regis council in Bedfordshire will charge an extra £75 to the families of overweight or obese people as of April in order to cover the cost of the extra space it says is being taken up.
This will mean that bereaved families will pay £194 instead of the £129 that would be charged to bury a person of normal weight.
Councillor Linda Walmsley said the development is unfortunate.
"I couldn't say everybody would be willing to pay," she added.
In December, a report published by thinktank the King's Fund stated that bad habits including smoking and overeating are costing the NHS more than £6 billion a year.
