Researchers in Holland have discovered a link between weight gain and depression in older people.
The scientists studied over 2,000 people in their 70s and related cases of abdominal obesity to levels of depression.
They found that depressive symptoms were associated with weight gain and an increase in fat around the internal organs, which could lead to diabetes and heart disease.
"For the depressed public, it should be another reason to take one's symptoms seriously and look for treatment," said Stephen Kritchevsky, co-author of the study.
It was suggested that this could be because people with depression are more likely to have a poor diet and to turn to food as a comfort.
According to scientists at Temple University in Philadelphia, women who are obese may have psychological barriers that are preventing them from exercising, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of weight gain.
