Diabetes shoots up due to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles
New cases of diabetes increased by 74 per cent between 1997 and 2003, research published this week has revealed.
The majority of these involved Type 2 diabetes, which is linked to obesity and can lead to amputation of the limbs and blindness, the study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health said.
It is thought that the new findings could mean that cases of diabetes in the UK are increasing at a faster rate than cases in the US, although the total incidence remains lower, the report's authors said.
According to figures released by Diabetes UK in October 2008, more than 167,000 new cases were diagnosed between April 2007 and March 2008, while at the same time, the number of people registered as obese increased by 200,000.
People who are obese are around ten times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes, which develops when the body can still make some insulin, but not enough, or when the insulin that is produced does not work properly.
