Women who eat too much fat during pregnancy could be effectively programming their children to be fat, new research has suggested.
According to the BBC, scientists at Rockefeller University found that rats which had been born to mothers eating a high-fat diet had more appetite-stimulating proteins in their brains than those born to mothers who ate a reduced fat diet.
They found that the creatures tended to weigh more throughout their lives, which could have important implications for research into obesity among humans.
Lead researcher Dr Sarah Leibowitz said: "This work provides the first evidence that links high levels of fats circulating in the mother's blood during pregnancy to the overeating and increased weight gain of offspring."
The new research echoes a previous study by the Kaiser Permanente Centre for Health Research, which found that mothers who gain more than 40 pounds (18.1 kilograms) could store up a lifetime of problems for the child, including heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
