Fast food firms launch healthy eating initiatives

A number of fast food restaurant chains in the UK have launched measures aimed at cutting levels of obesity, it has been revealed.

Six of the biggest companies have promised to cut the levels in salt and fat in their foods, as well as pledging to train staff in how to offer healthier options.

McDonald's has said it will provide new fruit and vegetable options on its menus, while Subway will give away free salads with its subs as a trial offer.

Rosemary Hignett, head of nutrition at the Food Standards Agency, said: "Eating out should be fun and we don't want to change that, but we believe restaurants can help make it easier for us to make healthier choices."

Meanwhile, a study by the City University of New York has claimed that banning advertisements for fast food on the television could cut childhood obesity by up to 18 per cent.

Its researchers said they have proved a link between advertising and obesity for the first time.
