Researchers in New Zealand have claimed that sugary, fatty foods could be as addictive as cigarettes, causing people to become addicted to them rather than simply enjoying eating them and overindulging.
Dr Simon Thornley, a registrar with the Auckland Regional Public Health Service, explained that carbohydrates such as those in sweets and processed meals cause a rush of sugar in the blood, the Daily Mail reports.
"This rush of sugar stimulates the same areas of the brain that are involved with addiction to nicotine and other drugs," he continued.
Dr Thornley suggests that these findings could lead to new ways of treating obesity, for example, by banning adverts for fatty, carbohydrate-laden foods on television and putting health warnings on packaging.
According to scientists at the Centre for Obesity Research and Education and the kinesiology department at Temple University in Philadelphia, women who are obese may have psychological barriers that are preventing them from exercising, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of weight gain.
