Hospital 'forced to buy new beds' for obese patients

A hospital in South Yorkshire has spent £19,200 on reinforced equipment this financial year which includes two strengthened beds to hold people who are obese.

Barnsley Hospital was forced to introduce the new equipment to deal with the growing numbers of patients who are too heavy to lie on standard beds, the South Yorkshire Star reports.

While ordinary beds can hold 39 stone, the reinforced ones are capable of supporting 73 stone in weight.

A hospital spokesperson said the purchases were essential to minimise the risk of injury to patients or staff.

The newspaper states that £44.8 million has been spent collectively by the NHS in recent years to cover equipment necessary for obese people.

Figures released by the Department of Health in October showed that diseases brought on by being severely overweight cost primary care trusts £4.2 billion in 2007, which is expected to rise to £6.3 billion in seven years if nothing is done to combat the epidemic.
