The number of people having surgery on the NHS for their obesity has risen by 40 per cent in the last 12 months, new NHS figures have shown.
According to the NHS Information Centre, there were 2,724 operations involving ether stomach stapling or gastric bypass in 2007-08, compared with 1,951 the previous year.
There was also an increase in the number of people being treated for problems associated with obesity, such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.
Hospitals have said that they are struggling to cope with the influx of patients.
Professor Philip James, of the International Association for the Study of Obesity, commented: "The NHS just does not have the capacity and staff trained to deal with this."
The government has previously warned that as much as 90 per cent of the UK population could be obese by 2050 if nothing is done to curb the increase in cases.
