People who have excess fat around their abdomen - affectionately known as love handles - could begin to suffer from decreased lung function.
This was the conclusion of research carried out at the Paris Investigations Preventives et Cliniques Centre, which showed that men and women who had waist measurements of over 40 inches and 35 inches respectively had a significantly reduced ability to draw breath, independent of other variables such as age and smoking.
Natalie Leone, lead author of the study, said: "We found a positive independent relationship between lung function impairment and metabolic syndrome due mainly to abdominal obesity."
It was thought that too much fat could put pressure on the diaphragm and chest wall, although it may also be attributed to fatty tissues causing inflammation in the lining of the lungs.
Last month, it was reported by researchers at the University of Kuopio in Finland that people who suffer from sleep apnoea could reduce the effects of their condition by losing weight.
