Man told he is too fat to drive a bus

A man who sought a job as a bus driver after being made redundant from a haulage company has been told he is too fat to take up the position.

Alec Spinks, who is 29 and weighs 23 stone, went for an interview with East London Buses, but was told his weight exceeded the firm's limit of 20 stone, the Barking and Dagenham Recorder reports.

The company said the limit is imposed because there is a risk that people who are overweight could break the bus seats, which causes a health and safety risk.

"I feel I have been discriminated against. I'm not incapable of doing my job," said Mr Spinks.

Transport for London said in a statement that the weight policy is the responsibility of individual companies within the transport network.

Last month, it was revealed that British couple Damien and Charlotte Hall had been refused the right to adopt because Mr Hall is obese.
