Next generation 'will be too fat to work'
The health minister has warned that hundreds of thousands of children will be too obese to work by the time they reach the age when they should be beginning to earn a living.
Dawn Primarolo said that weight-related illnesses which affect people's ability to work, such as heart disease and diabetes, will more than double by 2050, the Mirror reports.
"[Obesity] increases health risks and certainly has the potential to shorten lives. On top of that it affects quality of life, ability to work," she commented.
The minister also criticised television programmes which seem to glorify obesity.
According to the government's Change 4Life campaign, nine out of ten children will grow up to have excessive amounts of fat in their blood unless something is done.
The news follows comments from paediatric dietician Clare Baber last week, who said that children as young as two are now being treated for obesity.
