A new survey has discovered that a surprising number of people do not think there is anything wrong with insulting people who are overweight.
According to a poll, nine out of ten people have suffered this kind of abuse, with 46 per cent of respondents saying they have referred to or thought of an overweight person by a derogatory name.
Those aged 16 to 24 were most likely to use jibes towards larger people, with 56 per cent saying they had done so, reports the Telegraph.
In addition, there were found to be demographic differences in the levels of abuse, with Londoners more likely to use an unkind name towards a friend than Scots.
Mandy Cassidy, a psychotherapist with LighterLife, said: "It's sad that adults now find such behaviour acceptable. Just because someone is overweight, it doesn't mean it's acceptable to insult them."
