Obese women 'could have more complications during first pregnancy
Women who are obese could be putting themselves and their baby at greater risk during their first pregnancy.
This is according to researchers at Kings College in London, who discovered that of the very overweight women they studied, 39 per cent had to have a Caesarean section, while they were also twice as likely to have a premature, underweight baby.
Professor Lucilla Poston, who led the study, said that the results were surprising, since obesity is usually associated with above average weight babies.
"We must now start to consider first-time pregnancy as an additional problem in obese pregnant women," she added.
It is thought that the adverse effects could de due to insulin resistance.
