New research has discovered that woman who are obese may have psychological barriers that are preventing them from exercising, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of weight gain.
This is according to scientists at the Centre for Obesity Research and Education and the kinesiology department at Temple University in Philadelphia, who surveyed exercise data from overweight women, as well as from normal and underweight subjects.
They found that obese subjects were more likely to feel self-conscious, be fearful of injury, afraid of failing, or feel too heavy to exercise. These were also the people who were likely to be least active 12 months later.
Temple University clinical psychologist Melissa Napolitano said this is proof that more tailored programmes are needed to help the obese lose weight, since simply eating less and exercising more will not always work.
"These might sound like excuses to some people, but for those who have these aversions, they're real problems," she remarked.
