The skin complaint psoriasis could be linked to obesity, scientists in the Far East have found.
Researchers at Taichung Veterans General Hospital and National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan, studied 158 people as part of a study to be published in the medical journal Archives of Dermatology.
They found that people with psoriasis were more likely to be obese than those who did not suffer from it, as well as being more likely to have high blood pressure and diabetes.
This was attributed to the fact that psoriasis sufferers appeared to have higher levels of the hormone leptin, which is produced by fat cells and could cause metabolic abnormalities.
"Psoriasis was independently associated in our study with [high leptin levels]. This novel finding links the chronic inflammation status of psoriasis with metabolic disturbances," the authors remarked.
Earlier this week, researcher reported having discovered six genes that could be intrinsically linked to obesity because they change the way people think about food psychologically.
