The current levels of obesity could result in a shortage of professional jockeys and stablehands, it has been claimed.
According to Deborah Butler, a researcher from Warwick University, young people are getting too fat and lazy to participate in the hard work that mucking out horses involves and are turning away from careers in the equestrian industry.
She comments in her PhD: "This once ready supply of potential staff has been gradually contracting due to
the younger generation's increasing body size and their unfamiliarity with the very physical nature of stable and stud work."
Jump racing jockeys usually weigh about nine stone, while flat racing competitors normally weigh around eight stone.
Only 20 people a year on average go on to become professional jockeys, while many who do not make the grade still participate in horse-related jobs.
Anyone who is hoping to become a professional jockey should follow a balanced diet, possibly considering weight loss supplements such as Night & Day to burn extra fat.
