Obesity 'could cause thyroid problems'
Scientists have discovered a link between obesity in childhood and the function of the thyroid gland.
Although an underactive thyroid is often cited as the cause for some cases of obesity, a new study from Italy claims that obesity could cause an underactive thyroid.
Dr Giorgio Radetti of the Regional Hospital of Bolzano said: "We found an association between body mass and thyroid hormone levels, which suggests that fat excess may have a role in thyroid tissue modification."
However, the research found that after weight loss, the thyroid returned to normal, suggesting that obese children who lose weight will go on to lead a healthy life and have normal thyroid functions.
An underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough hormones and leads to tiredness and putting on weight.
According to Bupa, it affects around 19 in every 1,000 women and one in 1,000 men.
