Obesity 'could cost NHS £6 billion by 2015'
New figures released by the Department of Health have shown for the first time exactly how much obesity is costing the NHS.
In 2007, diseases brought on by being severely overweight cost primary care trusts £4.2 billion, which is expected to rise to £6.3 billion in seven years if nothing is done to combat the epidemic.
The research found that only 38 per cent of adults know that obesity can lead to heart disease and only six per cent know about the link between being and developing cancer.
In addition, it was discovered that parents underestimate how much unhealthy food and convenience food they buy.
Public health minister Dawn Primarolo said: "Obesity is the biggest health challenge we face - every year 9,000 people die prematurely. And many people simply just don't know that being overweight can lead to major health problems."
