People who are obese, particularly in middle age, may be more likely to develop dementia later in life, new research has found.
According to a paper published in the March issue of the academic journal Neurology, being severely overweight and having the associated problems including diabetes and cardiac disease could cause cases of Alzheimer's to increase by as much as 23 per cent.
The research suggests that by losing weight, people may be able to cut their chances of developing the degenerative brain disorder.
Dr Ronald C Petersen, chairman of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council of the Alzheimer's Association, said the findings are important.
"There may be some modifiable lifestyle factors that may influence our risk of developing cognitive impairment. Development of cognitive decline need not be a passive process," he added.
According to the Alzheimer's Society, the disease affects around 417,000 people in the UK, a figure which may increase as more people become obese.
