Obesity 'could increase risk of arthritis'

People who are obese could be putting themselves at greater risk of developing arthritis, a new study has found.

Research published by Flavia Cicuttini from Monash University in Melbourne found that not only are larger people putting more pressure on their joints, but the excess fat could be producing chemicals which are attacking the cartilage between their bones.

Professor Alan Silman, medical director of the Arthritis Research Campaign told the Telegraph that this could have major implications for the future of healthcare.

"If the level of obesity continues at its current rate the NHS could be swamped by the need for this type of surgery," he pointed out.

According to the NHS, the two main types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, however, there are 200 other forms.

The most frequently affected joints are in the hands, spine, knees and hips and symptoms include stiffness, pain, restricted movement, swelling and redness of the joints.
