Scientists in the US have discovered that eating large amounts of sugary food could cause obese people to become desensitised to it, making them crave it even more.
According to researchers at Penn State University who carried out studies on rats, this could provide a vital link between taste and weight.
The scientists said they want to carry out further investigations into how the brain's control mechanism fails and drives the body to crave more sweet food past a certain weight.
Andras Hajnal, associate professor of neural and behavioural sciences at the university, speculated that the increasing amounts of sugar and salt that go into processed foods could be decreasing sensitivity to these tastes, which could be contributing to the obesity epidemic.
Meanwhile, according to scientists at Temple University in Philadelphia, women who are obese may have psychological barriers that are preventing them from exercising, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of weight gain.
