One gene could cause obesity, study finds
A new study carried out by a British professor has found that a gene known as FTO could increase the risk of obesity.
Research carried out at University College London and published in the International Journal of Obesity found that in a test where children were allowed to choose as many biscuits as they wanted, the four and five-year olds who ate more were likely to have one of two high-risk FTO genes.
According to Jane Wardle, director of the university's Health Behaviour Research Centre, which is run by Cancer Research UK, said that while previous research linked the FTO gene with obesity, the new findings could help parents assess their children's risk of the condition.
"We believe this research published today tells us more about how some children are more responsive to signals in their bodies encouraging them to eat when full than others," she explained.
She added that parents whose children carry the FTO gene may wish to help their sons and daughters by keeping temptations away.
Last October, figures from the Department of Health revealed that 11.5 per cent of parents recognise that their children are overweight or obese.
The figures also found that many families use snacks to diffuse conflict, reward their children or alleviate boredom.
