One in three adults 'will be obese by 2012'
A study by scientists at University College London has made some startling predictions about future obesity levels in the UK.
According to researchers from the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, who studied data from 1993 to 2004, 13 million adults in Britain - or one in three - will be classed as obese by the time London hosts the Olympic Games.
This is an increase from the one in four currently classified in this way.
The scientists warned that this will lead to major public health problems, including diabetes, cancer and heart disease.
"There is an urgent need now to reverse this trend towards obesity and there are no signs, as yet, that it is reversing," said Dr Paola Zaninotto, who led the research.
It was reported in October that during 2007, diseases brought on by being severely overweight cost primary care trusts £4.2 billion.
This is expected to rise to £6.3 billion in seven years if nothing is done to combat the epidemic.
