Overweight women 'face a battle with prejudice' in healthcare

New research has discovered that women may be being put off going to seek healthcare because of the attitudes of staff members towards their size.

In a study to be published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, scientists from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centre found that many people had suffered dismissal, prejudice or unkind remarks about their weight.

The women questioned reported feeling embarrassed at needing, for example, larger gowns or chairs or said they had been told to simply lose weight even though doctors had not properly examined them.

Professor Emily Merrill said: "The participants in our study described the experience of seeking healthcare as a constant battle and struggle and were upset by the reactions of healthcare staff."

She added that this is an issue that must be tackled, since more people than ever are overweight and this could mean that they stop seeking healthcare even in serious circumstances.

It was reported recently by LighterLife that nine out of ten overweight people have suffered abuse as a result of their size.
