A number of high street retailers have said they are carrying out research in order to draw up new sizes for children's clothes.
Shops including Next, Asda and Monsoon are measuring 6,000 children to determine what the average size is for each age group because many children are now too big for the clothes labelled with their age.
The retailers said that this is because the measurements are based on 1990 sizes, which was before the obesity levels in children were as high as they are now.
Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, said: "The number of obese children is spiraling out of control and that is what is bringing up the size of the average child."
According to the government's Change4Life campaign, 90 per cent of children will grow up to have dangerous levels of fat in their blood if nothing is done to prevent it.
Health secretary Alan Johnson recently said that 9,000 people now die of obesity-related conditions including diabetes and heart disease every year.
