Scientists have discovered a gene that could be causing up to two-thirds of the population to eat an extra 100 calories per meal.
Research carried out by the University of Dundee found that those with a rogue version of the gene called FCO are drawn to fatty and sugary foods over more healthy options.
It is thought that this version of the gene could be carried by up to 63 per cent of British people.
There was no evidence, however, that these people had any trouble registering when they were full, only that it affected their choices of food.
Commenting on the study to the BBC, Dr Ian Campbell, medical director of the charity Weight Concern, said: "Given that half of us have the FTO gene, making us more prone to eating fatty, sugary foods, this must surely help us to understand how difficult it can be for individuals to simply use will-power to change their behaviour."
