Special offers on food 'could cause weight problems'
Putting snacks on offer in supermarkets could lead to people overeating so that they do not waste food, it has been claimed.
Tam Fry, spokesperson for the Child Growth Foundation, said that special offers, for example, buy one, get one free promotions, will encourage people to pick up two packs so they do not miss out on getting a bargain, as will making portions smaller.
"Having bought the two they’ll feel constrained to eat the two," he pointed out.
The government is currently providing information about healthy eating to families as part of its Change4Life programme, which encourages people to eat better food and move around more in order to avoid sedentary lifestyles and obesity.
It estimates that 90 per cent of today’s children could be obese by 2050 if nothing is done.
