Surgery reports increase in obesity procedures
A private clinic which performs gastric bypass operations and fits gastric bands has reported a marked increase in the number of people seeking such surgery.
The National Obesity Surgery Centre, based in Manchester, said it had seen a 350 per cent increase in the number of people seeking such operations as a way of reducing their weight during 2008.
Barrie Crabtree, director of the clinic, said that this could be because people are more aware of the risks associated with being obese.
"There therefore seems to be a greater awareness from people that they need to take action sooner rather than later," he added.
The news follows reports issued by the NHS last month, which showed that the number of people having anti-obesity surgery on the NHS rose by 40 per cent in the last year.
Its figures showed that there were 2,724 such operations in 2007-08, compared to 1,951 the year before.
