Western world 'faces cancer explosion' from obesity
The western world is putting itself at risk of a cancer epidemic in years to come if it does not do more to battle obesity.
This is according to Professor Kathy Pritchard-Jones, president of the European Society for Paediatric Oncology, who said that cancers of the colon, kidney, breast, liver and prostate will all increase if the west does not increase the amount of exercise its young people do and encourage them to eat healthily.
"We are going to have another explosion of cancers, to which unhealthy lifestyles will be a significant, contributory factor," she warned.
Meanwhile, a poll by the International Union against Cancer has found that around 40 per cent of people in the US, South America, Australia and New Zealand do not know that being severely overweight can cause cancer.
The World Health Organisation predicts that deaths from cancer will surpass those from heart disease by 2010.
