Working shifts 'could make people fat'

Working during the night could lead to people becoming obese because of changes to their metabolism.

This is according to the findings of a study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, who tested a number of subjects for changes in their heart rates and temperature after working shifts.

They found that the body's rhythms became misaligned and the people were affected by a slowing of their metabolic rate, which could lead to obesity and associated problems such as diabetes.

Study co-author Frank Scheer explained: "Normally, the body clock prepares the body for certain activities at a certain time of day. But when it's out of synchronisation, it doesn't prepare it properly."

In January, health minister Dawn Primarolo warned the UK that hundreds of thousands of children could be too obese to work by the time they reach the age when they should be beginning to earn a living if nothing is done to fight it.
